Application Method

Mix contents well before use, stir contents often during use. Stir thoroughly, as pigment concentrations may settle. DO NOT THIN THIS PRODUCT. If using multiple pails of stain, mix them for consistent color uniformity. Apply using a brush, roller, stain mitt, stain applicator pad, or sprayer. Apply one coat by fully saturating the wood surface with a generous amount of stain. DO NOT ALLOW THE STAIN TO POOL OR PUDDLE ON FLAT SURFACES. Remove or spread out any stain left on the wood surface after 30-60 minutes. EXPERT Stain & Seal self levels on vertical surfaces, while back brushing may be required on horizontal surfaces. Using a dry cloth, remove puddled or excess stain after application from flat, horizontal surfaces. If not removed it may leave a shiny film on the surface, delay drying time, and cause premature failure.

EXPERT Stain & Seal's penetrating oils go deep into the wood, drying slowly for several days after application. Finished color can take up to several weeks for true color. DO NOT walk on stained surfaces for 24 hours, allowing 72 hours for light traffic.

Questions & Answers

Have a Question?

Ask a Question
  • How long do you have to wait on treated pine before applying stain and sealer?

We recommend waiting until the wood has reached a 13% moisture content. In most climates, this is seen around 4-6 weeks after installation. The best way to check is with a moisture meter - these are about $30 and can be purchased at most any local hardware or home improvement store.

  • how many feet does a gallon of solid cover and how many for semi trans?

You can expect an average coverage rate of 125-150 sqft per gallon on rough cut lumber and 175 sqft per gallon on smooth cut lumber for all transparenceis.

  • Love your pecan semi-transparent stain. Ideally how long should stained deck set before getting rained on? 48hrs?

Thank you! It is our most popular color, nationwide.
Yes, we recommend a full 48 hours of no rain in the forecast after staining your deck to avoid water spots forming. No traffic (people, pets, furniture replacements) for 12-24 hours, ideally, then light traffic for 36-48 hours.

  • On a new fence using Pressure treated pine, what is recommendation on waiting time before applying your stain and seal. I know typically you need the wood to dry out.

We do recommend waiting until the moisture content is 13%. In most parts of the US, we see this acheived in the 3-6 week period.

  • We are putting up a new gazebo and want to make sure we give it a very good coating to avoid having to re-stain it in a couple years - is it advisable to give it 2-3 coats?

Thanks for the question! EXPERT Stain works best when you apply one heavy coat & backbrush the stain into the wood. The oils penetrate deep in the wood, conditioning it to last for years. All penetrating oil stains are designed for reaplication every 3-5 years, depending on color choice so that the oils continue to condition the wood, preventing warping, cracking, and twisting of the boards.

  • When applied with a pump sprayer do I need to brush as well or just spray on and be done?

    Spray on and be done!

  • Can this stain and seal be applied with a pump sprayer?

Expert Wood Care Stain & Seal can be applied with a pump sprayer, rolled, or brushed onto fences & decks.

  • Hi I am thinking of getting mahogany semi-transparent stain - can I apply it with my Graco Magnum x7 paint sprayer? If so what tip size/rate?

The Graco Magnum x7 is excellent for applying our product. The tips that come with it will work fine. 515, 521, 1221, etc.

  • Will this stain attract any kind of fungus or mildew since its oil based ?

There aren't any fungus or mildew that are able to survive on paraffinic oil.

Mildew require warmth and moisture (water) to survive. Our penetrating oil is mildew resistant as long as you keep an eye on the shaded, slow to dry portions of your fence and maintain with wood cleaner.

  • Can the stain and seal be applied in the sun?

Expert Professional Wood Care Stain & Seal can be applied in the heat of the sun or the cool of the winter! Just make sure to properly prepare the fence or deck surface prior to staining.

    Got more questions? Call us!

  • On new cedar decking what is the process for mill glaze and how many coats?

    Hi Mark,

On new cedar decking we would recommend using the eco-cleaner to clean any debris and mill glaze from the surface of the wood. After it dries, you should only need one coat. New decking should use a transparent or semi-transparent due to smoother surface characteristics.

Remember to make sure the decking or fencing is dry before staining. Use a moisture meter to confirm less than 13% water content.

Pecan Stain Looks Great

The pecan stain was excellent, it looks great once applied and we have received many compliments. As for the square footage recommendations, I believe they should be updated. Per gallon I believe the square footage for smooth cut lumber is less than what is advertised. The associates who I spoke to were nice, however I think customers should be reminded that square footage is more than the deck floor boards and we should take in account railings, steps, etc. Yes, I know rookie mistake on my part, however a friendly reminder would have gone a long way.

Amazing!

I purchased 25 gallons of Expert Stain & Seal Semi Transparent Pecan. The order was packed securely during shipping and arrived in only 2 days. Applying the stain was incredibly easy. No back brushing was required. I've had many neighbors stop and ask me where I got it from. Everyone is in love with the final result!

Great stain!

Had used this stain a few years ago for a fence outside of our house. It has done a great job protecting the overall fence. The top rail, probably due to extreme sun exposure, didn't fair as well. Got another gallon and it took care of the issue. I would say that Experts is not the least expensive option in the market but it does a great job.
